Silicon Valley’s Wealthy Finally Buy Art (When Not for Sale)
Pace Gallery, the powerful contemporary art gallery, has cracked how to entice Silicon Valley’s wealthy anti-materialists into buying art: don’t put the art up for sale.
The latest exhibition housed in Pace’s temporary Menlo Park, Calif., space, Pace Art + Technology, showcases digital works by teamLab, a Japanese art collective, which opened last week. Instead of a typical gallery show, none of the 20 works, which use algorithms, 3D projectors and an app, were for sale. For $20 admission, anyone can visit without any pressure to buy.
